Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt gets its thicker consistency from having any excess whey and lactose drained from it. It’s a great source of protein! 

There’s also Balkan-style yogurt, which is similar to Greek yogurt in consistency and taste but has slightly less protein.

Regular Yogurt

Sometimes called “stirred yogurt”, this is the traditional yogurt that has a creamy texture and can be plain or flavoured (with Vanilla or delicious fruit purées). 

For a more kid-friendly version, try drinkable yogurt. It’s an easy way to get nutrients if you’re on-the-go.

Kefir is a thin, fermented milk drink with yogurt-like consistency that has protein, probiotics, calcium, B vitamins and potassium! Its texture makes it a great ingredient for smoothies.

Frozen Yogurt

Often consumed as a substitute for ice cream, frozen yogurt is a flavoured, sweet treat. Because of the freezing process, this yogurt doesn’t contain any bacteria cultures.

Skyr is a traditional, cultured dairy product that originated in Iceland and can be made in Ontario. It’s made from skim or low-fat milk and has a similar consistency to Greek yogurt (with a milder, less sour taste).

Yogurt can be made in different ways, but the process usually involves these simple steps.

To start, bacteria cultures are added to fresh, pasteurized milk. This is what eventually gives yogurt its texture and tangy flavour.

The milk is heated and kept in a temperature-controlled environment so the bacteria cultures are activated.

Once the yogurt is a thick consistency (the longer the fermentation process, the thicker it’ll become) it’s cooled down and flavour is added.

Try plain Greek yogurt as a substitute for sour cream, mayo, and veggie dips.

Using yogurt in baking

Opting for yogurt will make your baked goods more moist. Plus, the acidity helps activate the baking soda, which will make them fluffier.
